A troubled woman set herself on fire yesterday in Chinatown to burn the demons out of her body, according to a law-enforcement source.
Lam Mayna, 37, used a lighter to immolate herself at the back of her apartment building on Catherine Slip at about 12:35 p.m., according to her family and sources.
Firefighters and a good Samaritan extinguished the flames that covered her body from the waist down as she pleaded with them to let her die, sources added.
EMS rushed her to Cornell Hospital in serious condition, where she was being treated for burns covering 50 percent of her body.
A 42-year-old man who identified himself as Mayna’s brother said she suffered from schizophrenia and had stopped taking her medication.
