NY seeks felony for prostitution near schools

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York’s Senate has passed a bill that would create a new felony charge for prostitution near schools.

The Senate’s Republican majority cites a Bronx case in which students and their parents had to walk past prostitutes and their customers. There were also complaints of condoms and hypodermic needles littering the ground.

The bill would create new crimes for anyone involved in the sex trade within 1,000 feet of school grounds.

It would be punishable by a Class E felony and a prison sentence.

The bill now goes to the Democrat-led Assembly for its consideration.
