New Yankees additions suffer tough transitions

Kerry Wood served up a homer to his first hitter of the game last night, in the top of the eighth inning. One frame later, Austin Kearns misjudged Edwin Encarnacion’s shot to left into a double.

The Yankee newcomers delivered poor performances in an 8-2 pounding by the Blue Jays. In fact, along with Lance Berkman, all three new Bombers are off to inauspicious tenures.

Kearns went 0-for-3, misread a fly ball into a double and is now 0-for-6 as a Yankee. Wood has faced nine batters as a Yankee and surrendered a homer, two walks and a single. The five outs he has gotten — two last night — all have been via strikeout.

Berkman didn’t play last night but is just 2-for-11 so far in pinstripes. Since the trio was acquired before Saturday’s trade deadline, Berkman and Kearns are a combined 2-for-17 and Wood has a 5.40 ERA.

Sure, it’s a small sample size, particularly in Wood’s case. But so far, not great.

Wood, who made his Yankees debut Sunday at Tampa Bay, made his home debut last night, entering with none on in the eighth and Hill at the plate. His fourth pitch was blasted over the left-field wall.

“Not the welcome I wanted wearing the pinstripes for the first hitter I faced,” Wood said. “But I was excited to get in there and glad the first one’s out of the way. Obviously, you would have liked to put up a zero there, but left a cutter up and he got to it.”

Kearns went down looking with two men on as a pinch hitter on Monday night, failing in his Yankees home debut. Last night against lefty Ricky Romero, Kearns, who was brought here to hit lefties, managed just a groundout to second, a flyout to center and a groundout to short.

“I’ve been in the American League the whole season, so I’ve kind of got a clue about some of these guys,” Kearns said. “Felt all right [last night], just no results.”

And then there’s Encarnacion’s double that Kearns allowed to sail over his head in the ninth.

“When I broke to get it, I kind of slipped a little bit,” Kearns said, then quipped, “Lacking on some catch-up speed.”

He and Wood were lacking last night, period.
