Wright says he expects Mets to make additions to get better in offseason

David Wright had a message for his bosses before flying off to Port St. Lucie to continue his rehab today:

I remember what you said last winter.

“With the money we have coming off the books this year, I expect us to go out there and make this team better whether it’s through free agency, whether it’s through trades,” Wright said, after working out with some kids, before boarding a plane for Florida.

It was the first time Wright had spoken since the Mets’ other All-Star, Matt Harvey, joined him on the DL after suffering a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm Monday.

“I still believe in the vision that Sandy has and although for the time being this looks like a step backwards it gives other young pitchers opportunities to kind of step up and show what they have for the rest of this year,” said Wright, working his way back from a strained hamstring. “And hopefully Matt’s back next year but if not, I’m still confident in the plan.”

Wright was as devastated as everyone else in the organization by the news about Harvey.

“I think the Matt situation blindsided everybody,” he said. “But I’ve done my rehab with him last couple days. He’s in good spirits.”
