Twitter’s new hire: #esales

Twitter’s latest executive hire, Ticketmaster’s ex-CEO, is a sign that the micro-messaging platform is open for business.

Twitter yesterday announced Nathan Hubbard, formerly of Ticketmaster, would head up e-commerce on the platform.

The San Francisco company did not comment beyond the official announcement, but e-commerce experts said the company, led by CEO Dick Costolo, clearly is trying to promote its platform as a potential sales generator.

One strategy could work like this: Vendors target tweets to users who then click to buy the promoted goods, and Twitter could take a cut.

Twitter, as The Post first reported, has started a preliminary process towatd a late 2013/early 2014 IPO.

Some, however, are skeptical about tweeted sales as a business model.

“They may experiment a bit more with e-commerce,” said Sucharita Mulpuru-Kodali of Forrester Research. “They haven’t yet proven to have a lot of legs in selling things.”
