Awaiting a gruesome fate: guilty of being christian?

The Issue: Asia Bibi, who faces death for blasphemy against Islam after drinking a Muslim woman’s water.

After reading excerpts about the plight of Asia Bibi, I have only one view of Pakistan: The government, and apparently the majority of the people, are not deserving of a single American dollar in aid (“Sentenced to Death for a Sip of Water,” Asia Bibi, PostScript, Aug. 25).

Even if it gives us an occasional lead about terrorist activities, this is not a country we should assist. The United States should seek to expedite Bibi’s release and give her and her family political asylum. John Wilcox

Parts of the Muslim community continue to live in the 13th century, and the rest of the world simply turns its collective head and says it’s not our concern and that this is their way.

As an American, I don’t understand why our government allows this type of atrocity to continue. As a Jew, I believe it is our solemn duty to help and protect Christians or any group that is persecuted, no matter where they live.

Rarely in history has anyone lent a hand to Jews, who were and continue to be persecuted.

We cannot allow this to happen to Christians. Sadly, Christians are given no public support in this country or around the world. Where are the churches? Silent.

Whether or not you want to acknowledge it, America is a Christian nation, and I am grateful it is. There has never in the history of the world been such a magnanimous nation as ours, at least until recently.

How can this happen in this day in age? Where is the outrage from the followers of Islam — the ones who say it is a religion of peace and tolerance? Think of those poor children losing their mother. Wendy Ferlin

I find it hard to believe that in this century we have a religious outlook so backwards, so oppressive, and destructive, yet it wields so much power over the rest of the world.

While the world’s intelligentsia prides itself on being so evolved, the reality is we have regressed. We do not hold these people accountable for their criminal acts.Jenny Wilson
