Myers the fall guy for the Giants

Brandon Myers knew exactly what play he was going to be asked about.

“That’s the last thing I wanted to happen, obviously, but it happened,’’ he said after having a rough time Sunday in his second game for the Giants.

The former Raiders tight end caught six passes for 74 yards, but he should have had more in the Giants’ 41-23 loss to the Broncos. In the second quarter, he cleanly beat linebacker Danny Trevathan over the middle. Myers had clear sailing but stumbled and fell over his own feet, settling for a 27-yard gain rather than a 45-yard scoring play.

“When I fell down? That’s inexcusable,’’ Myers said. “You’d like to have that back, but you can’t.’’

On third down on the same drive, Eli Manning’s pass sailed through the hands of Myers at the 1-yard line to complete a miserable series for the tight end, and the Giants settled for Josh Brown’s 24-yard field goal to trim the Broncos lead to 7-6.

“I threw it a little too high,’’ Manning said.

Steve Weatherford had a rough day punting the ball, with several line drives that gave dangerous Trindon Holliday opportunities for returns, especially the 81-yarder in the fourth quarter he brought back for a touchdown. “I didn’t have a good game, I have to do a lot better for my team,’’ Weatherford said.

WR Hakeem Nicks dropped a pass directly in his hands in the second quarter, which is highly unusual. There was a reason for the drop — Nicks dislocated the middle finger on his left hand on the play and had to have it attended to in the locker room. He was able to return with the hand heavily wrapped. “They just popped it back in place,’’ Nicks said. “Hit it dead on, it was bent the opposite way, this knuckle was facing there. When I got back in the game it wasn’t affecting me at all.’’

Incredibly, the Giants were a dismal 1-of-11 on third down. … The Giants have 73 rushing yards in their first two games. “It’s hard to win when you’re one dimensional,’’ G Chris Snee said. … “We knew they were going to move around up front and that shouldn’t have been an issue for us, but it seemed to be.’’ … The Giants have allowed 77 points. They gave up 80 points in their 0-2 start in 2007. … Brandon Jacobs, days removed from signing, was a big part of the offense, as he got the same number of carries (seven) as starter David Wilson. Jacobs managed to gain only 4 yards but did score on a 1-yard TD. … RB Da’Rel Scott got his first NFL touchdown on a 23-yard screen pass in the fourth quarter. … Pass rush? The Giants were credited with only two hits on Peyton Manning, none by their defensive ends.
