Siki Im defies fashion status quo

The Who:
The scene might have been a nightclub with Kate Nash, Zebra Katz and DJs Chelsea Leyland and Mike Nouveau sitting front row. Instead, it was an indoor parking garage filled with fashion folk who looked like dedicated fans.

The What:
It was a conceptual collection of minimal, hospital scrub-like garments informed by a Russian prison documentary. Im stuck to his customarily austere palette of white, black and grey, but added a few prison tattoo prints conceived with his personal ink man, MXM. Accessorized with washcloth caps and psych ward slippers over crisp white socks, the designer proved his is a mad, rad world.

The Highlight:
The finale saw a parade of gaunt models shrink wrapped in pink silicone — a poetic and perversely sexy stunt.

The Takeaway:
Siki Im designs the kind of clothes that seem better matched for foreign runways and sensibilities, thus his showings always offer a needed retreat from the preppy sportswear of the stateside status quo.
