Tigers’ minor league ballpark ravaged by fire

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A fire has destroyed multiple suites and caused part of the roof to collapse at a minor league ballpark in western Michigan.

Plainfield Township Fire Chief David Peterson said the response to Friday’s blaze at 10,000-seat Fifth Third Ballpark was slowed by a lack of fire hydrants near the park.

The chief tells MLive.com firefighters had to extend hoses to other hydrants, 1,500 feet away, which created low water pressure.

The affected suites run from home plate down the first base line.

A few workers were inside ballpark offices when the fire started in one of the suites. No injuries were reported.

The stadium is home to the West Michigan Whitecaps, a Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. It’s scheduled to host the Midwest League All-Star Game in June.
