ACCESS-A-RIDE ‘HIT-RUN’

A bus driver who shuttles disabled people hit an elderly man crossing a Bronx street and callously drove off, police said.

Juan Rodriguez, 71, was struck by an Access-A-Ride van driven by Lamont Weiters, 31, at the busy intersection of East Tremont Avenue and Boston Road in West Farms at 5 p.m.

Weiters allegedly did not stop and continued driving south on Boston Road, but an alert witness wrote down the van’s plate number.

Cops searched for an hour before they arrested Weiters on Zerega Avenue in Parkchester. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and assault.

Rodriguez was in critical condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.

It was not immediately known if there were any passengers on board the van, which is used by elderly and disabled people unable to navigate public transportation.
