Britney Spears sulks, sells perfume in new music video

Are you one of the tens of people who prefer Britney Spears’ ballads over her club bangers? Then, hello, here is the new video to her latest single, “Perfume.”

You may recall that “Perfume” was released to virtually no fanfare last month, appearing on the Hot 100 for just one humiliating week at position No. 75.

“Perfume” tells the story of a very sad Britney who is dating a very ab-tastic man. When Britney suspects him of cheating (a text message from Cindy? CINDY, YOU SLUT), she hopes that the other woman will smell her perfume on him. Would you like some more plot? No more plot for you — but there are lots of shots of Britney looking sad with some fresh makeup and flattering lighting!

Also, did you know that Britney Spears has an actual perfume called “Fantasy” that you can buy? She wouldn’t actually be so shameless as to put that product placement in her video for a song called “Perfume,” would she? Oh, yes, she would. Props to whoever’s running this thing, though, for not including a clickable hover ad that screams, “BUY FANTASY AT WALGREENS.COM NOW!”

For what it’s worth, Joseph Kahn, who directed the video, doesn’t seem too pleased with the final product.

Among other things, there was a planned gun element — Britney was seen pointing a gun at a man in a car on set. (It sparked a bit of controversy when it was pointed out that right beforehand, she was wearing a Virginia Tech hoodie. Oops.) Kahn went on a mini-tweeting spree to express his frustration over not having the final say:

If you want to see Britney wield a gun, you can go sign the petition to have a director’s cut released. Seven hundred five signatures and counting, baby!
