Giants report card: Dead Bolt-ed

OFFENSE

No points in the first half. Yuk. Eli Manning (20-of-32, 259 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs) had some misfires and never got in a groove, much to the delight of the jeering paying customers. Some good from Andre Brown (16 rushes, 81 yards) but some bad (lost fumble). Big game for Hakeem Nicks (5 catches, 135 yards) but a bit deceiving. Longest catch for Victor Cruz only 14 yards.
Grade: D

DEFENSE

Some of the worst coverage in the secondary we’ve seen in a while, with some rough moments for Terrell Thomas and Prince Amukamara. RB Ryan Mathews was a pest, as was Danny Woodhead. Nice carving from Philip Rivers (21-of-289, 249 yards, 3 TDs). Chargers converted 10-of-15 on third down, which is really bad defense. Other than two sacks by Justin Tuck, little pressure.
Grade: F

SPECIAL TEAMS

Charles James lined up offsides to give Nick Novak a reprieve after missing 41-yard FG, costing Giants three points. A kickoff return to the 40-yard line by Michael Cox was called back by a holding penalty on Ryan Mundy. Steve Weatherford perfectly angled a 48-yard punt to pin the Chargers on their 6-yard line. Kickoff returns by Cox were uninspiring, again.

COACHING

Perhaps Tom Coughlin needs to crack the whip, as his approach this week did nothing to get his club inspired to play this game. We’re long past expecting Kevin Gilbride’s passing game to dominate, but how about some consistency? Perry Fewell saw some bad lapses in the secondary.
