“As The World Turns” is preparing for its final spin.
The long-running soap opera has been cancelled and will leave its Midwood studio in nine months.
“I’m sad to see it go because I always hoped to see one of the cast members come out of the studio,” said Jeannie Chan, who lives just two blocks from the show’s studio.
The soap, which has aired for 54 years, tapes in JC Studios at the corner of East 14th Street and Avenue M.
The show’s cast and crew have been spotted patronizing local shops and restaurants. They’ll be missed, says Ary Ben, manager of Jerusalem Steak House II, located across the street from JC Studios.
“They’re customers over here. Every day I see them,” he told this paper. “Most of them like falafel sandwiches.”
Ben was not an avid watcher of “World” but his customers and staffers were often elated to see the attractive cast dine in the restaurant.
“People were excited to see them come in,” he said.
On the same block, Say Bagel & Cheese has also attracted cast members. Benny Shmulke says the stars are low-key.
“Sometimes they come. They’re just like you or me,” he said.
A call for comment to “As The World Turns” was not returned by press time.
But one “World” star is speaking out about the show’s cancellation.
“I can’t say I was super surprised. There have been rumors for a long time, but to actually hear the news is just a punch in the gut,” Terri Colombino told the New York Post. “Everyone kept saying, ‘I thought we had at least one more year.’”
