DHS: Terror attempt not part of larger plot

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday that she does not think the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound plane on Friday was part of a larger plot, and that air travel is safe for the public. Napolitano spoke on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Asked if the attempted attack was part of a larger plot or the work of a “lone wolf” terrorist, Napolitano said, “right now, we have no indication that it’s part of anything larger, but obviously the investigation continues.” She said airports have initiated more screening measures and that different airports would have different security processes. “So don’t expect to do the same thing at one airport when you transfer through to another airport,” she said.

Napolitano said the traveling public is “very, very safe in this air environment.” She also praised the responses of both the passengers and crew of the plane for their response to the attempted attack and airline and airport employees for quick implementation of new security measures.

“The system worked,” Napolitano said. “Everybody played an important role here.”
