Islanders’ Tavares focusing on strong finish

John Tavares and Steve Stamkos both grew up outside of Toronto, played on the same summer team that lost just once in four years, were opponents in juniors and No. 1 picks the last two years.

That, however, is where the similarities end.

While Stamkos shook off a slow start with Tampa Bay last season and scored 17 of his 23 goals in his last 28 games, Tavares started quickly this year, but has just two goals since Dec. 9.

“When you go through a whole year and you come into the next one knowing what to expect, that’s an advantage,” said Tavares, whose Islanders play host to the Lightning today at the Coliseum (2 p.m.; MSG Plus; WHLI, 1100 AM). “He had a great second half last year and now he’s really gotten better. He’s a great player.”

“Last year, Stamkos had his struggles,” coach Scott Gordon said. “That comes with the territory. That’s why I don’t beat John up for his numbers. He’s still only 19.”

Tavares, currently stuck on 17 goals, said he hopes to have similar success in his second season, but is trying not to think about that.

“Right now, I’m approaching every game thinking about where we are in the playoff race,” Tavares said. “I’m excited for what’s ahead in my career, but my focus is on now.”

But with the Islanders spiraling out of postseason contention as the Olympic break nears, it’s become clearer that Tavares’ development is more important than a possible playoff run.

“In your second or third year, you know what to expect and guys really come into their own,” Tavares said. “Every day, I’m learning something. And I’m looking forward to getting to where he is now.”

The Islanders hope that comes with increased size and strength, improvements that have allowed Stamkos to score 33 goals this season.

“I’m starting to hold my own, and I know there’s a lot of areas I need to get stronger with and that will come with training,” Tavares said. “I know this is a big summer for me, but I want to help get this team into the playoffs first.”
