PLAXICO’S JAILHOUSE ‘TRAINER’

Move over, Tom Coughlin — ex-Giant Plaxico Burress has a new coach to get him in shape for prison.

Burress’ lawyer yesterday revealed that the Super Bowl hero — who pleaded guilty Thursday to a gun charge — has retained a prison consultant to give him the lowdown on life in the big house. “We are consulting with an expert in the field who will address and advise us, Mr. Burress and his family, on what to expect while incarcerated, and how to use his period of confinement as productively as possible,” said the attorney, Benjamin Brafman.

Burress, 32, agreed to a two-year prison term when he pleaded guilty to attempted weapons possession and will be sentenced on Sept. 22.

The former grid great, who led the Giants to a Super Bowl win in 2008, was busted last November after accidentally shooting himself in the leg in a Midtown nightclub with his Glock semiautomatic pistol.

After his sentencing, Burress is likely to first be sent to the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill — a maximum-security prison — for evaluation on where he should do the bulk of his time in the system.

“Due to his notoriety, there is a potential that he would be placed in protective custody,” said Correction Department spokeswoman Linda Foglia.

“And those guys are held in single cells, with the exception of a shower, a visit, a medical visit. You’re only out of your cell for eight hours a day.”

But because Burress’ term is less than six years, the former Giant receiver is likely to serve the remainder of his term at a medium-security facility, she said.

Although his term will technically be two years, Burress can earn three months and 14 days of time off if he behaves behind bars, Foglia said.
