Animal trade ‘endangered’

The United Nations will consider 40 proposals to curb trade of endangered animal species come March.

Among proposals made to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species were tuna popular in sushi, corals used to make jewelry, and sharks whose fins make soup.

African elephants, the skins of certain snakes and crocodiles, and a range of animal-based waxes and oils used in cosmetics were also suggested for the regulation.

Most of the plants and animals proposed for the 2010 Doha conference in Qatar would, if approved by CITES’s 175 member states, be regulated in a government permit system.
