Snowed by weather gal: What was she thinking?

THE ISSUE: Weather reporter Heidi Jones’ fabricated account of being attacked in Central Park.

***

One can only imagine what was going through Channel 7 weather reporter Heidi Jones’ mind that caused her to make up the phony rape charge (“Co-workers at Channel 7 ‘Betrayed’ by ‘Rape-lie’ Weather Gal,” Dec. 16).

I am thankful, though, that she didn’t accuse an innocent man and have him arrested. At least she didn’t ruin two people’s lives.

I’m sure there are some who will be sympathetic to Jones, who falsely reported a police incident.

She said she had problems in a relationship and wanted to create sympathy. However, that sympathy would have been misguided and undeserved.

Besides leading police on a wild goose chase for an imaginary attacker, her phony report could have led police to stop and question various possible suspects, risking the safety of both police officers and the innocent individuals.

It’s a good thing that Jones was arrested. Hopefully, the Manhattan DA will be aggressive in her prosecution. Jones’ offense is not a victimless crime.

Jones is just another bimbo looking for her 15 minutes of fame.

How could someone concoct such a tale without realizing that hours would be spent searching for a phantom rapist, taking the police away from more pressing assignments?

This kind of self-serving publicity stunt must be discouraged. A stiff penalty, either in jail time or by draining Jones’ bank account, would do nicely.
