Mounted cop clears hurdle

An NYPD internal inquiry has cleared the head of its Mounted Unit for euthanizing three retired police horses when he went to a Pennsylvania farm to transfer a herd of 30 steeds to new digs.

Capt. Barry Gelbman, the unit’s commander, had the vet, Dr. Gary Kubala, put down the animals, to the dismay of several SPCA and other witnesses on April 1.

A subsequent investigation found the three horses variously suffered severe, chronic leg issues, pain and “would not get better.” Kubala said he would have “done the same for his own horses.”
