Five-alarm Brooklyn fire leaves one dead

A raging five-alarm fire tore through a Brooklyn apartment building last night — leaving one person dead and about 100 residents homeless and injuring nearly two dozen firefighters.

The fire, which erupted at around 6:40 p.m. on the fourth floor of the building on East 29th Street near Avenue D in East Flatbush, injured four residents and left one dead, officials said.

The body of a Mary Feagin, 62, a retired school guidance counselor, was found in the rubble after firefighters battled strong winds for several hours trying to extinguish the blaze.

None of the injuries were considered serious, but 15 of the 20 wounded smoke-eaters were taken to New York and Maimonides hospitals.

The ferocious blaze, which was battled by 200 Bravest, was not brought under control until early this morning, with strong winds complicating the firefigthers’ efforts.

One resident said a neighbor, with his 2-year-old child, was banging on his window to escape the fire.

“The guy came through the window . . . he had nothing. I gave him shoes, a coat, and a sweater.”

The building has about 70 apartments. The spokesman says a shelter for displaced residents has been set up at a nearby school.
