Hedberg will start for Devils in Dallas: report

Johan Hedberg will start his seventh straight game for the Devils when they play the Stars in Dallas on Tuesday, NJ.com reports.

Hedberg has won six straight since Martin Brodeur suffered a right knee sprain Feb. 6, raising his record to 12-10-2 this season, with a 2.45 goals-against average.

Brodeur has backed up Hedberg the past three games.

Hedberg stands 7-0-1 in his past eight decisions, matching yet bettering his career-longest point streak of 6-0-2 of 2002-03 with Pittsburgh.

“I was impressed with the way he’s been playing,” Jacques Lemaire said, according to the website. “Especially when your top goalie gets injured and you go in. You know it’s pretty much on you right now. And Heddy took charge.

“It was pressure for him. He handled it very well.”

Hedberg on Monday was named the NHL’s second star of last week for going 3-0, allowing three total goals in two victories over Carolina and a 1-0 shutout of the Rangers.

“It’s a different situation when you have my role,” Hedberg told the website. “If Marty wasn’t injured he’d mostly be playing and I’d be playing every two weeks or so.”

Sharks goalie Antti Niemi was chosen the league’s first star of the week, and Oilers RW Ales Hemsky was named third star.
