‘Big Shot’ Billups gets point for Knicks

Chauncey Billups has the perfect contract — and perhaps enough game remaining to be a nice fit for the Knicks.

Billups, dealt from Denver with Carmelo Anthony last night, becomes Raymond Felton’s replacement at point guard, and a source said coach Mike D’Antoni thinks he’ll be just fine for the short term.

Billups, 34, has a non-guaranteed contract for next season at $14.2 million, and as long as he impresses, the Knicks plan to pick it up.

His deal will expire in time to open up the salary-cap room to snare either New Orleans’ Chris Paul, who is represented by CAA, which also reps Anthony, or Utah’s Deron Williams, who recently told confidants he wanted to play for the Knicks once Stoudemire got there.

Billups is having a great season from the 3-point stripe, averaging a career-high 44.1 percent.

“They call him Mr. Big Shot for a reason,” Stoudemire said during All-Star weekend.

Stoudemire also said every good playoff team needs veterans and leaders such as Billups.

Felton struggled the past five weeks because he had played with a bruised knuckle on his shooting hand and fell out of All-Star consideration.

“I don’t even think it’s a downgrade for this season,” one NBA scout said of the trade-off.
