Former state Sen. Huntley bought clothes for her dog in taxpayer-funded shopping sprees: source

Looting lawmaker Shirley Huntley loaded up on fancy clothes and spa treatments — and that was just for her pet poodle.

The former state senator, who admitted stealing taxpayer cash for shopping sprees, took along her BFF, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook, to go bargain hunting at the Tanger Outlets mall in Riverhead, LI, a source said.

The duo would use half a tank of gas to get to the mall, home to upscale outlets including Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue and Coach.

The ladies also favored Lord & Taylor, and Huntley wasn’t just buying for herself — she made sure her white poodle was well dressed, the source said.

Huntley, 74, also loved fancy champagne and expensive cigarettes, the source said.

Huntley, who left office at the end of last year after losing a primary battle, pleaded guilty earlier this month to a federal charge in connection with embezzling $87,700 in taxpayer money from a nonprofit founded by her daughter.

She told Judge Jack Weinstein that she had an “agreement” with an unnamed member of the Assembly who funneled money to the nonprofit group Parents Information Network, or PIN.

“Once PIN received the state funds, I alerted this person, and together we used PIN’s funds for personal shopping,” she said.

The Post identified the lawmaker as Cook, an old friend of Huntley’s who also represents Jamaica.

Cook, 75, sponsored at least $135,000 in “member item” money to the nonprofit, state records show. Cook was also a co-sponsor of an additional $29,000 worth of funding.

PIN received a total of $415,500 in state funds, records show.

Huntley controlled PIN’s finances and wrote checks from its accounts to herself and a family member, the government says. The scheme also involved straw recipients of PIN money who would give most of the cash back to Huntley.

Huntley faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on the federal charge. She agreed to pay back the stolen state money.

Cook has not been arrested. Prosecutors refused to comment on whether they are pursuing a case.

Neither Huntley nor Cook returned calls for comment.
