Finding hotspots

Do you often do business on the road but struggle to find a strong cellphone signal or a public Wi-Fi network nearby? Open Signal can help you make the right connections with your wireless devices.

The Android app will show you how strong your phone’s voice and data connections are and direct you toward the best signal nearby.

You can also see where Wi-Fi hotspots are located and the strength of various wireless carriers in your area on a map.

Open Signal will also help you keep track of your monthly data, minutes and text-message usage, and see how well your carrier has performed in the past.

On Open Signal’s main dashboard, a compass will point you toward the strongest signal. From this screen, you can also get detailed information about your current connection.

The dashboard will also tell you the number of Wi-Fi networks in your area; whether your Wi-Fi is on; what network, if any, you’re on; and how strong that signal is. You can also click on a button to see a map of nearby hotspots.

Open Signal offers a color-coded map showing how strong local wireless carriers’ signals are. The deeper the red on the map, the better the signal is. Weaker signals are illustrated by green and blue.

On the app’s stats page, you can see your monthly data, minutes and text-message usage, as well as your signal-strength history.

Open Signal is free for Android-based mobile devices and should soon be available for the iPhone.
