Knives out for TSA rule

WASHINGTON — The Transportation Security Administration’s plan to allow small knives on planes has sparked a revolt in Congress, where Republicans and Democrats are vowing to block the change.

Nearly 130 House members of both parties have sent a letter to TSA Administrator John Pistole telling him to forgo the policy and warning they’re introducing a bill to reinstitute the ban.

In the letter, they note the 9/11 terrorists used boxcutters to hijack four airliners.

“This level of congressional opposition should serve as a wake-up call to TSA,” said Rep. Michael Grimm (R-SI), who co-authored the legislation and is circulating the letter for signatures.

“The decision to lift the ban on knives was done without any rhyme or reason and without consulting stakeholders, like members of Congress, flight attendants and air marshals and the general public.

“I don’t know which is more idiotic — the policy or the process.”

Pistole has told a House panel he intends to continue the policy unless Congress blocks it.
