Obama shutting down Prospect Park for school visit

You might want to reschedule that play date.

President Obama will shut down Prospect Park on Friday for six hours to visit a Crown Heights school two miles away.

All 538 acres of the sprawling Brooklyn space will be closed from noon to 6 p.m., according to the Prospect Park Alliance.

Obama will be visiting the Pathways in Technology Early College HS. He praised the school in his State of the Union address for preparing students for today’s economy.

He also will be attending fund-raising events in the city that day.

Marine helicopters were seen touching down on a baseball field earlier this week as part of a security drill. Obama is slated to land in the park for his appearance.

“Such precautions are unfortunately necessary,” Brooklyn Rep. Yvette Clarke said in a statement.

“Until we have enacted serious forms of gun control to remove illegal firearms from our communities, public figures in the United States must remain vigilant.”

Community Board 6 district manager Craig Hammerman called the closure “an inconvenience” but added, “for a head of state, perfectly understandable.” His district covers Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Gowanus and Cobble Hill, but the park is a separate entity that is not under the jurisdiction of a community board.

The park attracts more than 10 million visitors a year. It includes meadows, picnic houses, a zoo, a conservancy and Brooklyn’s only lake.

Obama caused major gridlock last month when he came to town for the United Nations General Assembly. Roads were blocked and bike lanes were rerouted for his two-day trip.

The White House didn’t return calls seeking comment on the park closure.
