Next QBs up: Browns’ Campbell, Vikings’ Ponder

It’s backup Jason Campbell’s turn to start at quarterback for the Browns. It’s Christian Ponder’s again for the Vikings.

Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman was diagnosed with a concussion after showing up to the facility with symptoms following his debut for the team Monday night against the Giants. Freeman, who started the season with the Bucs, struggled mightily in that game, completing 20 of 53 passes.

Freeman has to go through a battery of tests to get clearance to play again, and coach Leslie Frazier thinks that it will be very difficult for that to happen on a short week.

That means Ponder will return Sunday against the Packers after losing his starting job a month ago. Ponder started the first three games, all losses for the Vikings.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinksi benched struggling starter Brandon Weeden and will go with Campbell on Sunday against the unbeaten Chiefs. Campbell is the third QB to start in eight games for Cleveland, following Weeden and Brian Hoyer, who sustained a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 3.

“It’s a tough decision,” Chudzinski said. “I believe this is in the best interest of the team, and ultimately and gives us the best chance to win. I’m excited to see what Jason will do with this opportunity.”

Campbell, who has made 71 NFL starts in nine seasons, will make his first start for Cleveland. The Chiefs lead the league with 35 sacks.
