St. John’s has soft early schedule

Where’s the beef?

That’s the question that jumps off the page after seeing the St. John’s 2013-14 non-conference schedule.

Considering the Red Storm are loaded with returning players, plus the additions of highly touted forward Orlando Sanchez and prize recruit Rysheed Jordan of Philadelphia, coach Steve Lavin opted not to load up on the non-Big East schedule, nor did he book many games against teams with unorthodox styles, experiences which can be beneficial in March.

Instead the Johnnies loaded up on meat which could serve another purpose — securing a high seed in next March’s NCAA Tournament.

With the exception of Bo Ryan’s methodical Wisconsin team and Syracuse’s vaunted 2-3 zone, the Johnnies don’t face another proven power opponent or a style which can make for preparation nightmares.

Lavin said he stuck to a formula he believes has worked for him in the past.

“The non-conference scheduling formula covers the bases in terms of RPI, SOS and games away from home,’’ Lavin said. “Balance in the schedule is the objective.’’

Lavin already has accomplished one objective: He has put together a wealth of talent. St. John’s returns more than 90 percent of its firepower from last year’s team led by Big East Rookie of the Year JaKarr Sampson and shot-blocking phenom Chris Obekpa.
