All hail King-to-be George VII — or maybe VIII?

Prince William and Kate Middleton announced today they’ve picked a tradition-rich name for their newborn baby: George Alexander Louis.

Until great grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, grandfather Prince Charles and dad William leave the throne, the youngster’s title will be “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.”

The baby king-to-be doesn’t have to take his given name for his royal title, decades from now when he takes the throne.

In fact, it’s been long believed that Prince Charles wants to take the title King George VII once his mom, Queen Elizabeth II, steps down.

That means William and Kate’s baby would have to be George VIII or pick another name.

The most recent King George – George VI – was actually born Albert Frederick Arthur George.

King George VI famously took the throne in late 1936 after his older brother, King Edward VIII, stepped down to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson.

The story of George VI, who rallied his nation through World War II despite a severe speech impediment, was told in the 2010 Oscar-winning “The King’s Speech.”

Royals watchers dissected the baby’s new name, citing every word as a potential tribute to history.

Alexander was a name held by three medieval Scottish kings, while Louis might a nod to Lord Louis Mountbatten – late uncle of of the queen’s husband Prince Philip, and the last British Viceroy of India.

“George” was the odd-on favorite among British bookmakers, ahead of James, Alexander, Arthur and Louis. And George was the 12th most popular baby name in the United Kingdom in the past year.

The moniker is rooted in deep royal tradition.

Queen Elizabeth II is the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of King George III, best known for losing control of the American colonies two-and-a-half centuries ago.

Kensington Palace said the royals are “delighted to announce” their son’s name.

For now, the baby is expected to stay out of the spotlight after making his first public appearance in the arms of his parents outside of London’s St. Mary’s Hospital yesterday afternoon.

The couple introduced their son today to Queen Elizabeth II, who was keen to see the baby before she starts her annual summer vacation in Scotland later this week.

The young family then headed to see Kate’s parents in their village near London.

Now that Kate and William have chosen a name, they are expected to soon choose a photographer for the baby’s first official portrait.

The public’s only sighting of their future king happened yesterday when his beaming first-time parents left St. Mary’s.

The tiny monarch was wrapped in a white blanket and both parents took turns holding him in front photographers.

“Very emotional, it’s such a special time,” said Kate, wearing a baby-blue polka dot dress and white high heels. “I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like.”

Prince William hinted that doctors and nurses have had more face time with the young royal than he and his wife.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen him, really, so we’re having a proper chance to catch up,” William said.

The 8-pound, 6-ounce baby won’t have any problem making his feelings known, dad William said.

“He’s got a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure,” said William, himself a future king of England. “He’s a big boy. He’s quite heavy.”

The self-effacing prince joked that his pretty wife’s DNA carried the day.

“He’s got her looks thankfully,” William cracked, predicting that his son won’t have his fast-receding hairline. “He’s got way more [hair] than me, thank God.”

Baby George was born a little over two years after Kate and William’s extravagant, telecast wedding at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.

The due date was never discussed, but it is believed that it was July 13, making the baby almost 10 days late.

William apologized to photographers waiting yesterday outside in the summer, and joked that he’ll chastise his son for all the commotion he’s causing.

“I’ll remind him of his tardiness when he’s a bit older,” William said. “I know how long you’ve all been standing here so hopefully the hospital and you guys can all go back to normal now and we can go and look after him.”

The couple ducked back into the hospital and re-emerged minutes later.

Prince William carried the baby in a car seat and handed him off to Kate in the back seat of his Range Rover.

The prince comically wiped his brow in relief, before jumping in the right-hand driver’s seat and rolling away with the royal motorcade to Kensington Palace.
