Michelle Obama readies rap album

Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus aren’t the only stars readying albums for the fall; First Lady Michelle Obama is as well.

Today it was announced that Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign will release an album titled “Songs for a Healthier America” next month. The 19-song compilation touts the virtues of healthy living and features song titles like “U R What You Eat, “Veggie Luv,” and the slightly less emphatic “We Like Vegetables.”

Before anyone gets too excited, the album will not feature any singing or rapping from the First Lady. Instead, Mrs. Obama helped will make cameos in ten videos distributed to schools in New York and other cities in conjunction with the record.

More disappointing than the album’s lack of the First Lady’s vocal stylings is the track listing, which leaves something to be desired. Sure there’s hip-hop legend DMC, but the roster of talent is mainly filled with has-beens and never-weres like Doug E. Fresh, Travis Barker, and Monifah. Knick fans might be interested to hear guard Imam Schumpert spit a few bars, though.

While it’s unlikely that there’s a line of A-List talent waiting to sing and write songs about the importance of healthy living, the album’s lack of star power is a surprise. Let’s Move! was launched with an original song and video from Beyoncé after all.
