Readers’ love for swimming heroine

God Bless Diana Nyad for her record-breaking swim from Havana to Key West (“64-year-old Swims From Cuba to Florida — Without a Shark Cage,” Sept. 2).

She persevered and kept aiming for her goal at age 64. Let’s hear it for women.

Congratulations to Nyad. Her swim from Cuba to Florida was nothing short of amazing.

I ought to know. Nyad and I are both 64. I played water polo and swam in high school, and played water polo in college, as well.

Along the way, I’ve surfed nearly every break in California, many in Mexico, and even some in the Seychelles.

Swimming in open waters as she did, Nyad proved age is just a number. Her accomplishment definitely is newsworthy. Nyad belongs in the Baby Boomers’ Hall of Fame.
