Sanchez to get second opinion on injured shoulder

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will visit renowned orthopedist James Andrews this week to get a second opinion on his injured right shoulder, according to a source.

The extent of his injury is still not totally known, but sources have said his condition is more serious than the bruise that has been reported in some outlets. A source said at this point, the Jets think Sanchez may have a separated shoulder. They do not think it is a torn labrum, but they will know more once he visits Andrews in Pensacola, Fla.

Sanchez injured his shoulder in the fourth quarter of the team’s preseason game with the Giants last month when coach Rex Ryan inserted him into the game behind the backup offensive line. The injury forced Sanchez out and led to rookie Geno Smith starting Sunday’s 18-17 victory over the Buccaneers.

The Jets maintain Sanchez is “day-to-day” but a source said he is out for at least the first two weeks, and could be out longer. Before Sunday’s game, Sanchez was throwing left-handed on the MetLife Stadium field.

Wide receiver Santonio Holmes played his first game in nearly a year as he returned from the Lisfranc injury in his left foot that cost him most of last season and kept him out of training camp. Holmes had one catch for 13 yards on three targets in the game.

Holmes did not have much to say when asked how he felt he played.

“We’ll let the tape dictate that,” he said.

Cornerback Dee Milliner, the first-round pick, had a rough start to the game. He gave up a long pass to Vincent Jackson on the first series and then was beaten by Mike Williams for a touchdown in the first quarter. After that, though, he settled down and played pretty well.

“They got a couple plays on me,” Milliner said, “ but after that players came to me and told me to just be me, just go out there and make plays and I tried to finish strong.”

Fellow first-round pick Sheldon Richardson tied for the team lead with seven tackles and also had a half-sack.

Center Nick Mangold (elbow), wide receiver Jeremy Kerley (head) and tight end Jeff Cumberland (chin) all were injured but later returned. Wide receiver Clyde Gates appeared to injure his knee late in the game.
