Staten Island fire hero killed by ‘drunk’

A brave Staten Island firefighter was killed in New Jersey by a drunken driver as he drove his motorcycle to work Friday morning, authorities said.

John Monteverde, 56, was hit by motorist Anthony Marsal, 24, at 5:30 a.m. in Elizabeth, according to authorities.

Marsal was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving, according to a Union Police Department spokesman.

“John selflessly served the city for more than 31 years during which he was cited four times for his bravery at fires,” said FDNY Commissioner Sal Cassano.

“He also devoted countless hours working tirelessly at the World Trade Center site following the September 11 terrorist attacks.”

Monteverde worked at an Upper East Side fire station for almost 30 years before transferring to the Staten Island station five months ago.
