James Gordon the star of Fox ‘Batman’ prequel

Throw another comic-book series on the prime-time fire.

Fox has ordered “Gotham,” which will revolve around James Gordon — before he became Commissioner Gordon and started working with Batman to fight crime in Gotham City.

The series, created by Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”) — and produced by Fox and Warner Bros. TV — will explore Gordon’s back story, when he worked as a detective on the Gotham City police force.

The character of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, will not be part of the new show, according to deadline.com.
Gordon was introduced to readers in the very first Batman comic, published in 1939. The role was famously played on the mid-’60s ABC “Batman” series by Neil Hamilton, and he’s been played on the big screen by Gary Oldman.

Warner Bros. TV is also teaming with DC Comics for the series “Flash” set to premiere next season on The CW.

Prime-time shows based on comic books have been a hot TV property for some time now, not only with “Smallville” — The CW series based on Superman — but also with ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” which premiered Tuesday night to solid numbers — nearly 12 million viewers, and a timeslot win (8-9 p.m.) in adults 18-49 — and with “Arrow,” which returns for its second season Oct. 9 (on The CW).
