Dire ad warnings as city DWI deaths double

Drunken-driving deaths in the city have doubled this year, according to new data.

So far, 36 people have been killed in 2013 from DWI-related traffic accidents — a 100 percent jump from 2012, according to the Department of Transportation. The fatalities have risen 125 percent from 2010, when 16 people were killed.

To combat tipsy motorists hitting the roads after hitting the sauce, the DOT announced an ominous new advertising campaign Friday.

In one ad, a driver with a set of keys and a beer bottle has to choose between a yellow cab on his left and a patrol car on his right.

“Where to? Home or Central Booking?” the ad reads.

In a second ad, the driver chooses between a subway stairwell and a foreboding hearse.

“Where to? The 6 train or 6 feet under?” the ad says.

The ads will be placed in restrooms and on coasters in bars, as well as atop subway entrances.

“Driving while intoxicated is a matter of life and death,” said Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

“We cannot say it often enough. Our bad choices can end lives.”

The grim ads come after another ad campaign was launched this week targeting reckless drivers.
