Cops hunt hammer-wielding jewel thieves

Two hammer-wielding thugs pulled off a jewel heist caught on dramatic video inside an Upper East Side store.

One suspect rang the doorbell at Travers Fine Jewelry on Madison Avenue, near East 76th Street, around 4:35 p.m., Sunday, and walked in – holding the door for his accomplice, police said.

Both robbers were carrying hammers and shouted “Don’t Move!”

The suspect in the dark-colored jacket is seen on the video pulling out a hammer and forcing the worker out of the tiny store.  The two struggle in the doorway while the other suspect, wearing a light-colored hoodie, gets one hand full of baubles from a display case.

That’s when the second store worker comes at the men, forcing them out of the store using a folding chair as a shield.

The thieves managed to swipe $15,000 in baubles from the shop before they fled, cops said.

No one was hurt during the robbery, cops said.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the assailants. One of the suspects is about 5-foot-9, 165 pounds and was wearing a black jacket and ski cap. The second suspect is about 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and was wearing a gray hoodie.
