Red Sox shave title-winning beards for charity

The Red Sox toted their scraggly facial hair to October glory, so perhaps they can be excused for bowing out of “No Shave November.”

On Monday, David Ortiz and Shane Victorino — two of the heroes of the Red Sox’s run to the World Series championship — had their beards shaved off in a promotion at Gillette’s headquarters in Boston.

The company donated $100,000 to the One Fund, which is assisting the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, as well as their families.

The two players were joined by Boston police officer Steve Horgan, who was immortalized in Red Sox lore after he celebrated Ortiz’ game-tying grand slam in Game 2 of the ALCS with raised arms while on duty in the team’s bullpen.

In spring training, outfielder Jonny Gomes and first baseman Mike Napoli encouraged their teammates to grow beards.

The beards would become the image of a scruffy, ragtag Red Sox team that rebounded from a 69-93 debacle to win their third World Series in 10 seasons.
