Willie Nelson, “Back to Earth”

This track off last year’s “Songbird” represents a return to form for the 74-year old music icon. It’s a traditional country lament that takes simple vocals and some acoustic guitar strumming and builds on them, until the song is chock-full of finger-picking steel guitar and harmonica.

Notorious MSG, “Dim Sum Girl”

Describing itself as a combination of Bruce Lee, Tupac Shakur and Lionel Richie, the Chinatown-based trio is the brainchild of three dudes going by the names Hong Kong Fever, Down-Lo Mein and the Hunan Bomb. This tribute to girls from Northern China – and the not-to-be-missed rap track “Chinatown Hustler” – is off their EP “Lunch Money,” out Oct. 9. Catch the band’s hilarious stage show Friday at Bowery Ballroom.

Ra Ra Riot, “Everest”

This tune off the self-titled EP by the six-piece band from Syracuse has an air of foreboding and darkness, courtesy of fast-paced guitars and a steady drumbeat. Wesley Miles’ high-pitched vocals and the song’s sporadic bursts of cowbells stop it from being too melancholy, though. The band opens for the Editors at Webster Hall on Friday.

Oh No! Oh My!, “The Party Punch”

The Austin-based band infuses its catchy pop with hints of country (no doubt inspired by its Texas origins) on this practically acoustic song off their EP “Between the Devil and the Sea.” The head-bobbing chorus (“No I don’t even care”) will have you clapping and singing along like you really mean it. The band is at Mercury Lounge on Saturday.

The One AM Radio, “In the Time We’ve Got”

Despite its tale of a failed relationship full of regret, this song by Los Angeles-based Hrishikesh Hirway is somewhat upbeat. Quiet vocals and lush instrumental arrangements are the hallmarks of the songs on the album “This Too Will Pass.” Hirway plays at Union Hall on Thursday.
