SUMMER OF ‘77

Remember the sizzling, scintillating summer of 1977 when Billy Martin’s Yankees stormed past the Red Sox and went on to capture their first World Championship in 15 years by beating the Dodgers in six games as Reggie Jackson blasted three home runs in the grand finale?

In this series, The Post takes you back 30 years to one of the greatest seasons in Yankee history.

BLOOMINGTON-It was deep into spring training when Ron Guidry, anointed as the successor to contract-embattled Sparky Lyle, saw his fastball floating to the plate and his ERA moving into double figures.

“Maybe I’m not good enough,” Guidry remembers telling himself.

Now the American League hitters must be asking themselves if they are good enough to put a halt to Guidry’s

scoreless streak.

The 27-year-old Yankee blanked the Twins 4-0 last night for his second straight shutout. He has 19 straight scoreless innings, is 12-6 on the season and has the fifth-best ERA in the American League with 2.96.

Guidry allowed the slugging Twins only six singles, struck out four of them, walked nobody. He was never

really in trouble all night.

Lou Piniella broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when he homered off Minnesota’s best pitcher, Dave Goltz.

A triple by Willie Randolph followed and a single by Mickey Rivers made it 2-0.

Roy White’s homer made it 3-0 in the eighth and Bucky Dent’s sacrifice fly knocked in the last run in the Yankee ninth.

Guidry retired the last three Minnesota hitters on four pitches.
