SUMMER OF ‘77

Remember the sizzling, scintillating summer of 1977 when Billy Martin’s Yankees stormed past the Red Sox and went on to capture their first World Championship in 15 years by beating the Dodgers in six games as Reggie Jackson blasted three home runs in the grand finale?

In this series, The Post takes you back 30 years to one of the greatest seasons in Yankee history.

BOSTON – The Green Monster meets Kong Kingman tonight. Green Monster, beware.

Kingman’s second Yankee homer in two games helped the Yankees nip the Tigers 6-5. He now gets a chance to feast his eyes on the delicious sight of a 315-foot wall covered by a net.

The Red Sox should be covered by a net for letting Kingman slip past them on a waiver claim to the Yankees.

Despite their win in Baltimore yesterday, the Red Sox are fading fast, fourand- a-half games out in third place

while Baltimore hangs on three-and-ahalf games back. The magic number for the Yankees is now 10.

“I’m having lots of fun here,” Kingman said. Ron Guidry won his 15th with oneout help from Sparky Lyle in the ninth after the Yankee infield ganged up on him in a five-run Detroit finish.

“The Mets are losers,” Kingman said. “These guys know how to win. They have hitting, pitching and defense. Their hitting is contagious.”

Billy Martin said that Kingman would not start against righthander Reggie Cleveland. Ed Figueroa will pitch for the Yankees. Mike Torrez pitches tomorrow night against Luis Tiant.
