MLB: Bonds strains big toe

Barry Bonds left San Francisco’s game in San Diego in the third inning last night because of a strained right big toe.

The homer king was hurt attempting to make a play on a fly ball from Adrian Gonzalez at the left-field wall in the second inning. Bonds jumped attempting to make a catch and the ball appeared to hit off the glove of a fan who reached over the wall. Bonds appeared to land awkwardly on his right leg.

Bonds, who has 762 career home runs, played the rest of the second inning, but was replaced by Nate Schierholtz in the bottom of the third.

SOCCER: Red Bulls settle for tie

In Bridgeview, Ill., Cuauhtemoc Blanco had a goal and an assist to help the Chicago Fire tie the Red Bulls 2-2 last night. The Red Bulls (11-10-4) took a 2-1 lead when Juan Pablo Angel converted a penalty shot in the 69th minute.

NFL: Ward fined for late hit

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit and unnecessary roughness in Sunday’s game against the Browns.

AUTO: McLaren likely to pay fine

In Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, the head of McLaren wants to accept the record $100 million fine and suspension from the team championships if it means ending the Formula One spy scandal. On the track, Kimi Raikkonen took pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, edging teammate Felipe Massa for the first Ferrari front row of the season.

GOLF: Eaks surges in front

In Conover, N.C., R.W. Eaks shot a 66 to take a three-stroke lead over Rod Spittle after the second round of the Greater Hickory Classic. He is at15-under 129.

TENNIS: Davenport reaches finals

In Nusa Dua, Indonesia, Lindsay Davenport advanced to the final of the Bali Open in her first singles tournament since having a baby in June.

Davenport cruised past Sara Errani 6-1, 6-3. In today’s final, she will face second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova.
