Canucks edge Islanders, 2-1

TERRACE, British Columbia — Sergei Shirokov scored two goals, including a backhander midway through the third period, to help Vancouver beat the Islanders 2-1 on Monday night in an exhibition game.

Shirokov gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead early in the first period as the Canucks were on the power play. Islanders goalie Scott Munroe stopped Aaron Rome’s point shot but the rebound went straight to an open Shirokov, who one-timed the puck into the open side.

Jon Sim evened the game with a goal later in the period.

Terrace beat out other cities and towns across Canada for the right to host the game. After the final whistle, both teams saluted the fans, sending 40 lucky people home with signed jerseys.
