An Afghan refugee was held on $250,000 bail yesterday after it was revealed he vowed to shoot Mayor
Bloomberg because the mayor “doesn ‘t care about Afghanistani people.”
But Bloomberg shrugged off the threat. “I don ‘t worry about my own safety,” hesaid.
The threat to the mayor came from Awaliya Yaya,a Bronx man who called 311 on Wednesday,his 38th birthday,authorities said.
” I have a gun in my hand.I am going to shoot the mayor,” Yaya told the operator,according to a criminal
complaint filed yesterday.
“Mayor Bloomberg doesn ‘t care about Afghanistani people.He doesn ‘t respect or like them,” Yaya allegedly
said.
The 311 operator alerted 911 and a short time later cops arrived at Yaya ‘s apartment in The Bronx.They
found a butcher ‘s knife and a .38-caliber handgun in the bag.
Yaya told cops “a guy I know gave me the gun ” late last year.He conceded he called 311 but denied
ening the mayor or “anything like that.”
Yaya,a legal resident who came to the United States in 1987,was arraigned yesterday in a Bronx court and
held on $250,000 bail.
