SOLSTICE TOURNEY ON HOLD AT DYKER

N.Y. GOLF

Sad to say, but the longest day of the golfing year will be dark in Brooklyn. For the first time in four years, there will be no all-day, 54-hole tournament at Dyker Beach on June 21 to observe the summer solstice.

In the past, the Brooklyn Brewery sponsored the 54-hole shootout at the venerable Brooklyn course, but this year there was a conflict with Father’s Day and the U.S. Open.

“It’s something we’re going to continue to do, but it didn’t work out this year,” said Jeff Contrady, Dyker’s head pro. “We thought about doing it July 1, but it just kinda ruined the spirit of the whole thing.”

But if you are intent on “golfing your daylights out,” head to Michigan and check out the Grand Traverse Resort.

The 54-hole complex located just north of Traverse City is offering unlimited play on all three of its courses for $95 per person, per day. The dawn-to-dusk “challenge” begins at 6:57 a.m. and ends at sunset, about 9:45 p.m. For more info, call 800-748-0303.

Hale Irwin and Peter Jacobsen have joined the field at the Long Island Classic starting July 2 at Eisenhower Park.
