‘Breaking Bad’ fans stage ‘funeral’ for Walter White

This one reminds me of that old William Shatner skit on “Saturday Night Live” — the one where he told fans gathered at a “Star Trek” convention at a Holiday Inn to “Get a life!”

Fans of “Breaking Bad” staged a mock funeral last weekend in Albuquerque, NM — officially “burying” series antihero Walter White, the good guy high school teacher-turned-killer meth kingpin who died in the series finale.

(The series, which ended Sept. 29, took place in Albuquerque.)

Not only did the “funeral” include a hearse and an RV — like the one in which Walter (Brian Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) cooked their meth — but it also included a tombstone in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery for Walter — fashioned by “Breaking Bad” set designer Michael Flowers (who also delivered the eulogy).

The funeral attracted around 200 “mourners,” according to the Albuquerque Journal.

Video of the funeral was posted on YouTube.

While it sounds a bit cheesy, at least the funeral was all for a good cause — raising nearly $17,000 for Albuquerque’s Healthcare for the Homeless organization, according to local TV station KOB.

It wasn’t without controversy, however — upsetting some people who have relatives buried in the same cemetery who are worried the fake Walter White tombstone will attract tourists and gawkers to the site.

“My son is buried about 15 yards from where the makeshift gravesite is,” Manuel Montano told KOB. “This is a place of mourning. It’s not a spectacle.”

According to the Albuquerque Journal, cemetery officials only agreed to hold the mock funeral with the assurance they could remove the memorial if it becomes a tourist attraction.

“We are a cemetery first and foremost. Our allegiance lies with our families that have allowed us to bury their loved ones here,” said general manager Vaughn Hendren. “Being a cemetery, we see families bringing loved ones – kids, if you will – who have died from drug abuse.”
