REGARDS TO OFF-B’WAY

‘PROOF,” David Auburn’s drama about a woman who may have inherited her father’s mental illness, yesterday won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Play.

“Bat Boy,” the new musical about a creature who is half-boy, half-bat, was named Outstanding New Musical.

Mary-Louise Parker was named Outstanding Actress for her performance as the disturbed young woman in “Proof.”

The award for Outstanding Actor went to Alan Bates, for his portrayal of a novelist in “The Unexpected Man.”

“Mnemonic,” the Theatre de Complicite’s avant-garde show about time and memory, was honored as a Unique Theatrical Experience.

The awards recognize achievement off-Broadway. “Proof” is currently a hit on Broadway, but it’s first production was off-Broadway.

The awards, which are named after the late off-Broadway producer Lucille Lortel, will be presented May 7 at the Lucille Lortel Theater.
