8 tons of weed found in drug tunnel

Authorities discovered more than eight tons of marijuana and 325 pounds of cocaine in a “highly sophisticated” drug tunnel that runs between the US and Mexico, according to a new report.

The San Diego Tunnel Task Force said that the tunnel, linking two warehouses in Otay Mesa, California and Tijuana, Mexico, includes rail tracks, ventilation and lighting, according to NBC News.

The “supertunnel” stretches for about a third of a mile and is an average of about 35 feet deep, the station said.

The warehouse was found about 100 yards south of the US border, close to Tijuana’s airport.

Authorities said Thursday that the tunnel took “years and tens of millions of dollars” for drug runners to build.
