First YouTube Music Awards nominees announced

People have long stopped watching music videos on MTV, instead turning to web sites like YouTube to get their fix. The streaming video-sharing site is capitalizing on this with the inaugural YouTube Music Awards on Nov. 3.

While some of the categories would be right at home at the MTV Video Music Awards – Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Innovation of the Year – others are more Internet appropriate like Response of the Year, YouTube Phenomenon and YouTube Breakthrough.

The fledgling award show’s first slate of nominees is a mixture of big-name music industry acts (Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and PSY) and Internet-famous artists (Epic Rap Battles of History, ThePianoGuys and Walk Off the Earth).

The award show will stream on YouTube, but it won’t be some some rinky-dink web production. The event, which will be held in New York, will be co-hosted by Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watt, and feature previously announced performances by Lady Gaga and Eminem, along with ones by M.I.A., Avicii, and Tyler, the Creator.

Fans can vote for their favorite nominees now at the YouTube Music Awards homepage.
