Helen Fielding wants ‘Bridget Jones’ back the big screen

After writing her first “Bridget Jones” novel in 14 years, novelist Helen Fielding hopes that this one, like the prior two, will get a cinematic adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British author was asked if she wanted to see her latest novel, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” adapted as a movie during a Q&A at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hill on Friday.

“Well I don’t know because I’ve only just finished it, really,” Fielding said. “I mean I would like it. I would like to see it be a film.”

The first two “Bridget Jones” novels, “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” were released as movies in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Oscar-nominated actress Renée Zellwegger portrayed the eponymous lead in both.

Later in the Q&A, the British author went on to mention how excited she was to see Colin Firth, who starred alongside Zellweger in the first two movies, read out dialogue that she had written for the character Mark Darcy.

Of course, if “Mad About the Boy,” does make it to the big screen, there won’t be much Firth this time around. To the dismay of many of the series’ fans, the new novel focuses on a 51-year-old Jones, dealing with being a widowed mother of two five years after Darcy’s death.

Despite some fans’ anger at the move, the book has sold well in both the US and UK.
