Search for autistic teen goes on

Autistic teen Avonte Oquendo has been missing for 18 days and there have not been any credible sightings of the boy in recent days, the city’s top cop said Monday.

Commissioner Ray Kelly said the NYPD has devoted helicopters, divers and more than 100 cops each day to run down more than 200 tips and conduct interviews that could lead to the missing 14-year-old. Still, no signs of Oquendo’s whereabouts have emerged.

“What we’re doing now is searching,” he said. “We’ve interviewed anyone who has an arrest as far as the abuse of a child under 16. We’re looking at the [sex offender] registry. We’re going over locations again and again… We’re doing everything I think we reasonably can do.”

Hinting that the NYPD can’t devote hundreds of police officers to the search forever, Kelly added: “We haven’t cut back any resources but it is something that we are going to have to look at during the week. There’s no new information.”
